Unreal versions & upgrades
The current stable Unreal Engine release is 5.8, with 5.8.4 as the latest hotfix checked on October 24, 2026. Epic publishes the 5.8 release announcement, release notes, and 5.8.4 hotfix notes.
What this version means
The GEngine website guides now use UE 5.8 and the 5.8.4 hotfix as the current setup and upgrade target. This documentation change does not install Unreal, rebuild plugin binaries or establish native plugin compatibility. Check the plugin release supplied through your source library and validate it against your actual editor.
Browser Studio projects do not depend on Unreal. Their HTML, JavaScript, TypeScript or React runtime is unchanged by this engine update.
Upgrade an existing project
- Commit or back up the project, including plugin source and configuration. Keep the existing engine installation until the new copy is verified.
- Install UE 5.8 and its current hotfix through Epic's supported distribution. Confirm the exact version in Help > About Unreal Editor.
- Obtain the appropriate GEngine source release through Source access. Check its release notes and engine requirements.
- Open a copy of the project in the new editor. Regenerate project files and build Development Editor using the matching toolchain. Do not reuse plugin binaries compiled for another engine version.
- Follow the installation checks: open the Command Center, inspect Diagnostics and connect the MCP bridge.
- Test a read-only editor query, an undoable edit, Blueprint compilation and Play in Editor in the copied project. Keep build output and the exact plugin/engine versions with the result.
If the plugin fails to build or an editor operation regresses, keep working in the original copy while resolving that incompatibility. Changing a version label alone cannot fix an API change.
Keep AI context aligned
The context system reads documentation bundled with the installed plugin. Inspect its declared engine version. Compare outdated snippets against UE 5.8.4 headers and refresh the bundle before relying on them. Updating the website does not replace the bundle on your computer.
Engine release references
Use Epic's release and hotfix notes above when selecting a newer build. An engine being available is separate from a particular GEngine release having passed its native build and editor checks.
